Don't forget to set the size of your quilt to match the bed on which it will be showcased. Or, consider designing a twin- or queen-size quilt for use as an oversized throw on a couch.

When placing your fabrics into a layout, there are several factors to consider. The same fabrics can create very different looks depending on how they are placed in the layout.

  • Large-scale prints work best in larger patches or borders.
  • Small-scale prints work better in smaller pieces.
  • Play with a smooth transition of colors versus a higher contrast transition.
  • Select the thread colors that coordinate with the prints in your quilt design.

Choosing a fabric theme is an exciting step that will help your creation convey a certain mood. It's important when choosing a theme to consider color palette and pattern.

  • For romance, try Spring Bouquet or Endless Summer
  • Set a country mood with the Flea Market collection
  • Go clean with solid color groups such as After Midnight or Blue Days

It's important to remember that there are two sides to every quilt. Don't forget to design the back! Take a favorite print or solid from the fabric group you're working with and use it on the underside of your quilt.
